Jim discussed the flood plain in the area of the proposed North side C&DD landfill. He brought with him copies of the Army Core of Engineers flood plain maps issued in 1980. The maps had three different zones indicated as A, B, and C; zone A indicated the areas that would receive the most water overflow. He pointed an area on the Northwest corner of the property close to the Weathersfield Township border that would be a flood prone area (zone A). GUARD member Tony Kren volunteered to contact the Army Core to learn more about the maps.
When Jim was a Weathersfield Township Trustee, he fought against three different landfills in the area. One of them was behind McDonalds Restaurant in McKinley Heights, which caught on fire and caused a lot of problems. The second was near the RMI Titanium plant in Niles, which also caught on fire. The third one was on Austintown-Warren road and was in a flood plain. The operator of the Austintown landfill did prison time for the problems he created there.
