The city of Girard is continuing its fight to acquire about 41 acres of land along the Mahoning River, which would expand its current park and stop the creation of a landfill.
Officials from Girard were in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Friday arguing why they want to acquire the land. "It is very important for the city and it is not being used by the railroad," said Mayor Jim Melfi. "It will enhance our park system."
Total Waste Logistics would like to purchase the land to build a landfill, something the city does not want.
After the hearing the judges and the attorneys went to the site, so the judge could look at the area in question.
Melfi stresses that the plan for the city to acquire the landfill has been in place for nine years, and it was not intended to stop the landfill. "It is very important to have access to the Mahoning River for future development and to give us access for boating and other recreational activities," Melfi said.
A trial on the matter is scheduled for October.
The majority of the land is owned by the Ohio Central Railroad Company. The Ohio Leather Company owns a small portion of the property.

I commend the city of Girard in continuing their quest to purchase the 41 acres of land west of the Golf Dome. The purchase is a necessity to expand our recreational park activites, to connect Tod Park with the River, and to maintain/enhance the air quality of life in Girard(the proposed land purchase is also near the residential area of north state street, Avon Park and Squaw Creek).
Our small community of Girard does not need another dump site!
